Each week the staff at the Roseville Library answers more than 2,500 questions on every subject under the sun. Here are some of the most interesting ones they’ve gotten lately.
Q. Why can’t I download eBooks from the Library for my Kindle anymore? What happened?
A. For several years, the Library offered downloadable eBooks from two different vendors. This resulted in considerable duplication of materials and extra administrative costs. This month, the Library took the decision to consolidate our e-reader services on the CloudLibrary platform. This move will allow us to offer a deeper, richer and more accessible collection of eBooks, with the bonus of a single source which will provide clearer instructions for new users.
Unfortunately, our current vendor, CloudLibrary, is not compatible with some Kindle readers. Kindle Fire users will continue to have access to eBooks through CloudLibrary, but due to legal barriers that do not arise from the Library’s interests, other Kindle users will no longer be able to access eBooks through the current vendor.
The Library regrets the loss of service to certain Kindle users and we deliberated for a long time before we took this action. However, our funds are limited, and we cannot continue to support older formats when newer, more advantageous opportunities present themselves. We believe that CloudLibrary offers the best possible solution for the greatest number of Library users at present. We made this decision with the knowledge that technology never stops changing and advancing, and we hope that at some time in the future we may once again be able to offer service to Kindle users like yourself.
